ABOUT WALTER VERDICK AND HIS ACRYLIC SCULPTURES

Walter Verdick is a fifth generation sculptor whose ancestors began as silver and coppersmiths in Denmark. His creative efforts have included music, (playing guitar, saxophone, and trumpet) , design and fabrication of houses, furniture and lighting designs in acrylic and his highly individual acrylic sculptures. Verdick's creative education has mostly been at Parsons School of Design.

Walter's creative energy is beautifully expressed in his acrylic sculptures. He has acrylic blocks made to specification by Polycast Corporation, then begins the 200 to 250 hour process of creating the individual piece. The acrylic block is carved with carbide cutting blades and pneumatic chisels, then goes through several steps of grinding and shaping with sanding wheels. A pneumatic sander is then used, prior to the final 14 step polishing process. The translucent quality of the final sculpture is enhanced by the play of light upon the original form.
